How to Plan your Retirement Travel

How to Plan your Retirement Travel

Having come to the end of working life, you might think it high time to indulge in a little active recuperation! For many retirees, this means a little bit of travel. Here is your chance to go on all the adventures you've been putting off for your whole life. Why not seize it?

How to Plan your Retirement Travel

To get the most your retirement travel, you'll want to do a little bit of planning. This will allow you to work your way down your bucket list, and to do so without spending all of your savings in one go.

Create a budget

Travel costs money. In some cases, it costs a lot of money. You'll need to work out how much you intend to spend, and how quickly, and then plan your break accordingly. It might be that you already have a respectable pot of savings to dip into. Your budget should reflect how much you have. If you can't realise your travel dreams right away, then you might set up a goal for savings.

When it comes to finding cash quickly, retirees have several options. You might use an equity release mortgage to access the value that's stored in your home. You might downsize by selling your existing home to move into something smaller. If you sell for £500,000 and buy for £300,000, you can reinvest your profits over the course of a decade or more. If you don't intend to spend much time at home, then it's only sensible to live in something modest, and put the difference into the best possible travel experiences.

Focus on health

If you're going to be globetrotting, you'll want to be in peak physical condition. Look after yourself during your downtime, with the right nutrition and exercise. As you get older, you're going to be susceptible to a range of illnesses – but you might just feel that little bit more tired. Be proactive, and keep yourself in good shape. Holidaying can actually help you to do this: hiking, skiing, and white-water rafting all offer a wonderful means of staying in shape, while seeing the world and having a great time.

Get company

If you've got a circle of like-minded friends, then you might rope them into your travel arrangements. On the other hand, you might look for travel opportunities that might include the chance to meet new people and befriend them. The social benefits of travel can be considerable, especially for those who would otherwise spend the time interacting with the same limited handful of people.

Check paperwork

A lost piece of paper can scupper your holiday plans, or at least slow them down. Make sure that your travel insurance is sorted, and that you have all of your bookings in a single place. If you need any medication while you're overseas, make sure that you have the relevant repeat prescription to hand.
