Why Learning to Ski in the Summer is a Fantastic Idea

The summer season is usually a period of sun, sea and cocktails, as millions of us temporarily migrate to warmer climes for a week or two of rest and relaxation. But the summer months are not just good for risking sunburn; they can also be used in favour of a decidedly un-summery pursuit: skiing.

Why Learning to Ski in the Summer is a Fantastic Idea

Skiing is a pastime enjoyed by many in the UK; statistics indicate that around 250,000 of us participated in snow sports regularly before the coronavirus pandemic. Re-uptake of such habits has been seriously slow in the aftermath, even after slopes re-opened to all. But the interest remains!

Whether you are a seasoned skier looking to get back in the game, or someone completely new to the sport, getting started (or started again) can be a daunting prospect. But rather than throwing yourself at an Alpine chalet in the winter, there is much to be said about skiing in the summer. What are some of the reasons you should consider a summer skiing holiday over a more conventional week at the beach?

Quiet Slopes and Resorts

The summer is the busiest time of year for seaside cities and resorts south of the Channel, with tourists the world over flocking to sunny destinations for their own dose of vitamin D. Conversely, conventionally wintry destinations are less subscribed in the summer – both for tourists seeking season-appropriate holiday destinations, and for sub-optimal conditions for those at the height of their skiing game.

As a result, ski slopes and chalets experience their ‘off-season’ in the summer – making for quieter slopes and more room for you to work your magic. Quiet slopes are a great place for you to learn new skills, work on specific things or generally improve with relative freedom.

Cheaper Slopes and Resorts

As a side-effect of waning interest in the summer, chalets and ski resorts tend to bring their prices down. They can afford to charge premium prices in the winter, with demand often outstripping ‘supply’ of beds and slope space. In the summer, though, they need to entice visitors – hence discounted costs for entry and accommodation.

With this in mind, moving your ski holidays to the summertime can be a shrewd move for your finances just as much as for your peace of mind. Not only do you get to make the most of quiet, unspoiled slopes, but you get to do so at a reduced overall price!

Summer months are not just good for risking sunburn; they can also be used in favour of a decidedly un-summery pursuit: skiing.

Practice for the On-Season

The above qualities are reason enough for the inexperienced skier to fully enjoy a summer skiing experience. They also, together, form something of an opportunity for professional or budding skiers looking to prove themselves more seriously on the slopes. The summer is a golden opportunity to sharpen up on key skills and practice specific ski routes before the ski season well and truly begins.
