Let's travel Thar Desert and Jaisalmer city in India

Jaisalmer City in India

The Thar Desert is located 30 kilometers from India-Pakistan border, so if you are, for example, in Delphi, you will have to spend a whole day and night to get here by train. But it's totally worth it. Want to know why? Welcome to the Thar Desert and Jaisalmer travel guide!

This time on my India travel blog we will visit north-west part of the country, the Golden City called Jaisalmer, nearest lake Gadisar and the famous Thar Desert. I hope you will like it and you will know some new interesting places and tourist attractions.

Jaisalmer, famous Golden City

Jaisalmer, called also the Golden City, is an awesome city placed near the Pakistan border in India. There are so many things to do here, but I will write only about few that I enjoyed the most. You will meet such tourist attractions like Jaisalmer Fort, Jain Temples or the nearest Gadisar Lake. I hope you will enjoy this Jaisalmer travel guide.

Jaisalmer Fort

Jaisalmer Fort was built in the 12th century by Rawal Jaisal and it was an important part of the Silk Route, and its name comes from two words: Jaisal (king's name) and Meru (name of the mythical Gods mountain in the Himalayas). The Jaisalmer Fort is on the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Jaisalmer Fort

Because Jaisalmer Fort is all in yellow color, it's worth to visit it during the sunny day or even better, on sunrise or sunset - it glows like a gold and that's why its also known as a Golden Fort.

The fort was built on the hill, it's visible from far away and it's huge! For me, it was the best tourist attraction in Jaisalmer city.

Jain Temples in Jaisalmer, India

Jain Temples

You can find Jain Temples inside the Jaisalmer fort. There are seven main temples that were built by the Jain community between the 12th and the 15th century. Those temples were dedicated to the 23rd Tirthankara, Parshvanath and 16th Tirthankara (those strange India names, right?).

The biggest Jain Temple is called Paraswanath Temple and if you have a little time to spend, you should write this temple on your must-see list, as it's very beautiful. The architecture inside is awesome and while traveling here you should notice great carvings on the walls and pillars and marvelous workmanship in the stonework.

Gadisar lake near Jaisalmer City, India

Gadisar Lake

While traveling to Jaisalmer it's a good idea to spend some time and visit Gadisa Lake for a picnic. It's a water reservoir made by man that was once the only source of water in the city and it was created by Raja Rawal Jaisal. If you want to get here from the Jaisalmer Fort, it's just one kilometer from there.

The Gadisar Lake is beautiful, especially during the sunrise or the sunset. it's a nice idea to see some lake shallows because there are a lot of Catfishes (so much of them everywhere!).

Those fishes are also called Rajistan fishes because they have mustaches like the locals :-) Rajasthan is a northern Indian state bordering Pakistan.

The Thar Desert in India

Thar Desert

Let's start now with the second main part of this travel guide: Thar. If you didn't notice Jaisalmer in surrounded by the desert :-) If you are planning a one day trip to the Thar Desert, there are many different ways to do this.

I took a trip that included driving to the desert, riding on a camel, dinner over a fireplace and a night sleeping in the desert around a campfire. Of course, you can also go for a few days camel adventure with many campings on the desert, so if you have some more time, it's really worth to do this. The is also an option for people with a little more money - you can sleep in the royals luxury tents during your nights in the desert.

I love nomad-like adventures and my trip to the Thar Desert was the best tourist attraction during my travel to Jaisalmer. I made a lot of great photos, especially during a camel ride through the desert.

Conclusion

I hope this Thar Desert and Jaisalmer city travel guide helped you decide that it's really worth to visit this area. There are much more interesting placed and tourist attractions here, you just have to spend some more time in Jaisalmer. Thar Desert looks amazing until you want to go there and take photos (and breathe the scorching desert air). In addition, the city of Jaipur nearby, normally nice :-) By the way Fshoq! is a travel blog like this doll, it's fun to read and watch pictures. This text was translated automatically. Original text is below: Pustynia Thar wygląda niesamowicie, aż by się chciało tam pojechać i porobić zdjęcia (i powdychać upalne pustynne powietrze). Dodatkowo miasto Jaipur w pobliżu, normalnie miodzio :-) Swoją drogą Fshoq! to blog podróżniczy jak ta lala, fajnie się to czyta i ogląda zdjęcia.
