Hair care tips for gym goers

If you're a regular gym goer or have been sticking to your New Year's Resolution (first of all well done!), you may have noticed or be worried about how your hair is holding up.

Hair care tips for gym goers

If you are wanting to avoid causing it damage via excessive washing which strips oils or wearing harmful hairstyles that cause breakages, here are some handy tips to keep your hair in shape.

Prep

Before stepping foot in the gym, there are certain things you can do to protect your hair while you get a sweat on.

Dry shampoo works well to absorb sweat and oil, ideal if you have plans straight after your workout or if you are cutting down on the amount you wash it.

If you do plan on washing your hair after the gym, a workout can be the perfect opportunity to let some hair oil or a nourishing hair mask do its best work. Apply before you head out, and then you can benefit from beautifully sleek hair once it is freshly washed.

While it can be tempting to scrape your hair up into a tight bun, it is better to opt for a more protective hairstyle. Pulling it back too tightly can create tension which over time can cause breakage due to stress on the follicles. A low ponytail or plait could be great alternative options. Make sure you are using silk hair ties to avoid unnecessary pulling and frizzing.

Don't wash excessively

Excessive post-workout washing strips away natural oils which can leave your hair prone to dryness or loss of colour. Therefore, using dry shampoo in between washes is a good alternative. Prioritise your hair health by investing in decent shampoo and conditioner for when you do wash your hair. You could also try topping up your colour with good-quality hair toner.

Towel dry and detangle

Dragging a brush aggressively through your hair can be very damaging. Using a hair detangler and a wide-tooth comb will soften and smooth your strands and help to remove any knots without causing harm.

Towel dry your hair, using a micro fibre towel to avoid frizz, until most of the moisture is gone, spray in the detangler and then use your comb or brush of choice to gently remove any knots. Work your way from the bottom up when brushing in order to prevent unnecessary breakage.

Increase protein intake

As a gym goer, you are likely already aware of the benefits of consuming more protein for a healthy lifestyle and to help increase muscle mass. However, it also has benefits for your hair by strengthening the keratin in it, keeping it lush and shiny.

If protein powder isn’t your thing, not to worry, there are plenty of foods that are naturally high in protein that will be easy to introduce into your diet.
